When the summer crowds thin out and the first rains wash the dust off the fields, Malta and Gozo slow down. The sea still holds the warmth of the summer, the countryside turns green almost overnight, and the light softens into long golden afternoons. For a restorative break, November and early winter may be the kindest months to come.
Why wellness in Malta works best in November and winter
The appeal is simple: mild days, quiet paths and a sea that has not yet cooled. Malta's national weather service, the MetOffice at Malta International Airport, gives a climate norm of 21°C for the mean sea temperature in November. By December the water drops further, to around 17°C or 18°C on the figures collected on Wikipedia's climate page, which is bracing rather than balmy. Mean daytime highs at Luqa sit at about 21°C in November and 17°C in December, so a jumper for the evening and a light jacket for the cliffs is usually enough.
None of this is a cure for anything, of course. But fresh air, a swim, an unhurried walk and a decent night's sleep are things most of us feel better for, and the islands make all four easy in the cooler months.
Sea swimming in autumn
At 21°C the water feels cool for the first minute, then surprisingly pleasant on a calm, sunny morning. The sandy bays on the north west of Malta suit a gentle entry: Golden Bay slopes gently so you can walk in, and Għajn Tuffieħa next door, reached down a long flight of steps, has a red sand beach under the cliffs and the Lascaris era Għajn Tuffieħa Tower. In Gozo, Xlendi is a narrow bay between steep cliffs, with rocks on one side that swimmers use as a platform.
A few sensible rules matter more out of season. Lifeguard cover on Maltese beaches is seasonal, so assume nobody is watching. Look for the beach flags where they are still flying (red means swimming is not recommended, double red means the water is closed), and remember that wind can turn a calm bay rough within hours. Local forecasters such as Maltese Islands Weather publish daily lists of recommended bays, which is a good habit to check before you set off. Swim with a friend, stay within your depth if the water is choppy, and have a warm layer and a hot drink waiting. Walks when the land turns green
After the first proper rains, wild flowers and grasses push up through the terraces and the garigue looks fresh again. It is the start of the walking season, and the islands are small enough that a coastal path is rarely far away.
- Dingli Cliffs to Il-Fawwara: a very easy 7.4 km walk of about two hours along the highest stretch of Malta's coast, from Dingli towards Siġġiewi, with wide views out to Filfla.
- Golden Bay and Majjistral Nature Park: a moderate 7.85 km walk of around two and a half hours through the national park that protects six kilometres of coast, past stone huts and an old observation post.
- Selmun, Xemxija and Golden Bay: 8.5 km of moderate walking past an apiary and Roman baths, finishing with sand underfoot at Golden Bay.
- Wied il-Għasel and Mosta Valley: a short 2.5 km valley walk of about an hour and a half to the Chapel of St Paul the Hermit, ending at the Mosta Rotunda.
- Ramla walk in Gozo: 8 km from Marsalforn Bay through Xagħra, past Ta' Kola Windmill and the Ġgantija Temples, down to the red sand of Ramla Bay.
- Xlendi walk: a challenging 12 km day along Gozo's southern cliffs, from Mġarr Harbour by way of Mġarr ix-Xini and Ta' Ċenċ to Xlendi Bay.
Paths can be muddy and slippery after rain, and cliff edges are unfenced, so wear proper shoes and keep well back. Daylight is short in December, so start early. Every route is on our walks page.
Yoga, breathing and quiet
Malta's ancient sites lend themselves to stillness. Earlier this autumn Heritage Malta held a dawn session of gentle yoga and mindful breathing among the prehistoric stones, which we wrote about in Echoes of Calm at the Tarxien Temples. For something longer, The Samudra Experience Winter runs from 28 November to 4 December 2026 at Samudra Retreats in Qala, Gozo, a week of yoga, dance and meditation.
Spa days
When the weather turns, an indoor pool and a warm room are welcome. Two examples, as described on their own websites at the time of writing: the Carisma Day Spa at the InterContinental Malta in St Julian's lists an indoor pool, a Turkish hammam, a steam room and sauna, with opening hours from 9am to 8pm daily. In Gozo, Kempinski The Spa at the Kempinski Hotel San Lawrenz lists heated indoor pools, an oriental hammam and an Ayurveda centre. Many larger hotels across the islands have spas, so it is worth asking where you are staying. Check before you go whether day visits are available and what is included.
Runs and walks in November and December
If you like a goal on your calendar, the running season is in full swing. The Express Trailers Żurrieq Half Marathon and 10K is on 15 November 2026 through the southern countryside. On 22 November 2026 the Il-Mixja tal-President 2026 charity walk goes from San Anton Palace to Valletta, for a €10 donation that includes a T shirt. In Gozo, the Gharb Run sets off from Gharb Square into the country lanes on 29 November 2026. The Eurosport Safi 5K Race follows on 6 December 2026, and the Mdina 2 Spinola Xmas Road Race on 20 December 2026 runs 18.6 km point to point from Mdina down to Spinola Bay.
For a gentler pace, Heritage Malta's guided walks include Reliving the Tales of Kottonera in Cospicua on 19 November 2026 and Mixja ma' Mario Coleiro in Naxxar on 13 December 2026.
Slow mornings and markets
Wellness is also about eating well and taking your time. In Gozo, Swejjaq u l-Fiera tal-Milied fills Pjazza San Lawrenz on 29 November 2026 with folk music, a honey ring workshop and a craft market, free to attend. In Malta, the Woodland Christmas Market at Ta' Qali National Park runs from 4 to 13 December 2026, with free entrance, craft stalls and food among the trees. Our guide to Christmas markets in Malta and Gozo lists the rest.
Planning your restorative break
Base yourself in one place rather than moving every night: the north west suits walkers and swimmers, while Gozo is quieter still. Pack layers, walking shoes, a swimsuit and a towel that dries fast. Check the forecast and sea conditions each morning and keep plans loose so you can swap a swim for a spa afternoon if the wind picks up.
